FOX News – Biased? or Just Ignorant?

fair and balanced
On any given day, Fox News Channel has more unique viewers than CNN, MSNBC, and CNBC combined.

More people rack their brains with a steady stream of misinformation from the too-ugly for radio pundits and “anchors” at Fox than skim the headlines of the Sunday L.A. Times.

Bias and partisanship is more or less irrelevant when such a large percentage of the populous is exposed to downright misinformed pundits who speak from a “no-spin zone.”

The latest example comes from Bill O’Reilly, who not only proclaimed this week on his “Radio Factor” that “the war in Iraq is all about Chirac,” he later insisted on “O’Reilly Factor” that if al-Qaeda attacked the U.S., nobody would care if they hit San Francisco:

“[I]f Al Qaeda comes in here and blows you up, we’re not going to do anything about it. We’re going to say, look, every other place in America is off-limits to you, except San Francisco.

Media Matters for America has a deluge of further examples (with video), not limited to O’Reilly or the Fox News Channel.

It is not worth noting the incredulously ill-informed yammering and wankering that occurs on a daily basis across the cable and local news spectrum without pointing out the long-term harm this has on American culture.

The image of the United States in the eyes of the world is repeatedly harmed by the promotion and amplification of such absurd ideas as Scooter Libby’s indictment for perjury, among other things, proved that “no underlying crime” was committed. This was repeated in several news broadcasts.

Simply put, our nation’s comfort with consumer-driven news programs and networks is a serious threat to democracy.

This CAN be remedied. Most visitors or immigrants to the U.S. are completely surprised by the lack of pertinent local or international information in any American news broadcast. Most shocking of all, is that there are actually commercials!

A poll conducted by the Public Relations Society of America and released Thursday found that 61% of the general public generally trusted news on PBS and NPR, while 56% trusted papers like the Washington Post, Wall Street Journal or New York Times, and 53% trusted the commercial broadcast and cable news operations.

Considering this, how is it that the federal government is threatening to cut funding to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and divert those funds for Gulf Coast restoration and recovery efforts?

As it stands, without applying further cuts, Public Broadcating (radio & TV) gets a whopping $1.30 per capita in federal funding. Compare this to upwards of $100 in the UK and Germany, even $27 in Canada and Australia.

Clearly, something must be done.

Judy Miller resigns from NYT

Hot off the press

New York Times editor Bill Keller released this memo announcing Miller’s retirement from the Times this afternoon.

Only UK press follows Dana Priest’s lead in exposing CIA torture camps in Poland, Romania

Dana PriestDana Priest left a bold ’emdash’ dangling in the middle of her bombshell expose of the CIA “secret” prison camps in Wednesday’s Washington Post.

Just as every jaw in the land hit the floor she dropped this in the 8th graph:

“The Washington Post is not publishing the names of the Eastern European countries involved in the covert program at the request of senior U.S. officials.”

The reason: “disclosure might disrupt counterterrorism efforts….”

Its not that the Post didn’t know the names, they clearly stated they just wouldn’t print them. A small exchange to ensure the confidentiality of their sources, mind you, and a gold trail from which Joe Journalist could’ve raked up the missing details in his fingernails.

But for fear of following the yellow-cake road.

Priest said this afternoon in a live discussion session at Washington Post.com:

Senior administration officials did persuade The Post not to publish the names of the Eastern European countries we identified. I could say they were not happy about the subject in general, but no one suggested we ditch the whole thing, although I’m sure they felt that way.

The front page article had been on the website for over a day and no broadcast, print or online outlet had anything on the story except a cut/copy/paste including the dead-giveaway “terrorism” insinuation.

Needless to say, it couldn’t have taken much investigation for theFinancial Times
to release (with a WEDNESDAY date-stamp):

A leading human rights group on Wednesday identified Poland and Romania as the likely locations in eastern Europe of secret prisons where al-Qaeda suspects are interrogated by the Central Intelligence Agency.

Its not worth dwelling on the idea that exposing the locations of these prisons would endanger counterterrorism. The fact that dangerous terrorists are already contained within these camps is reason enough for publicity, especially considering the fate of Omar al-Faruq, the al-Qaeda chief who escaped a “maximum security” prison guarded by US troops in Afghanistan.

The real danger is that if the CIA goes on record identifying the locations of their “secret terror camps,” they will be stripped of their freedom to boycott International Crimes Court the U.S> gov’t would be fried.

The outsourcing of detainees to Egypt and Syria is no secret, but to torture prisoners of war in countries that do not endorse torture and have relatively clean human rights records is [insert horrifying comparison here].

This administration will be around another few years, most likely, but we CAN get over Libby, we can FORGET Delay – he’s one of many, and enough ? ENOUGH!! buying into the bird flu nonsense. Haven’t we already learned that it doesn’t matter how much money you use if you don’t have a plan?

Lets kick ourselves and stop thinking twice about yesterday’s news – the media army has alot more influence and independence than our helpless warriors in Iraq. I’ll bet they’re pulling for us now more than ever.

A note on numbers

Among the things that are especially pissing me off in regards to general media laziness and subordinance these days (not that I’m doing squat to counteract it) is the obsession with numbers. The number of casualties as a result of Katrina were irrelevant to the media in relation to the principle that the government wasn’t prepared and didn’t do enough to reduce that number – which the government admits (sorta).

But, the gov’t does not admit that it does not serve the greater good for thousands to die in Iraq, in fact, Torture Veep Cheney said again that the best way to honor them is to keep at it. What’s wrong with this principle?

Numbers do not represent right and/or wrong. Therefore – there are multiple sides in which any statistic can be framed.

As difficult as it may be to find a reason for certain facts, it is at the very least worth a try. Limbaugh et al may as well continue labelling everybody else the “liberal media” until people slap themselves and realize that its pointless to tell both sides of a story. Report the truth, and expect to criticize and hold the government to task NO MATTER WHO is in charge… or is it really true what DoD press releases say?

So, 2,000 dead in Iraq. The government and right wing pundits can easily point out that its a small price to pay for “democracy” in the Middle East and that its far less than in Vietnam.

Well, how many soldiers are severely if not permanently injured from this war? The ratio of injured to dead compared to Vietnam is astounding. How about the families that are being broken – children, parents lost… divorces painful and inexplicable extended stays in Iraq?

U.S. military casualties aside, if the gov’t gets a pass on that, how can the number of Iraqi civilian casualties be plainly ignored? Besides, the Iraqi referendum only “passed,” – and barely at that – because 2/3 of each Sunni province didn’t REJECT it. In other words, democracy is apparently defined by a thumbs up from only 1/3 of voters.

A final note, I am sick and tired of hearing about intelligent design. And, if the numbers don’t lie – regardless of whether or not they are WRONG – here they are from CBS News.
