A Really Good February

I have no idea what it means to be an Aquarius, but I do know that we are the best sign, and traditionally, February is the best month (despite being also the coldest), against all odds. 2008 is a leap year, and hear we are on the 17th, personally just 6 weeks removed from a 2.5 week trip to South America, and this Februrary — my 33rd — has been so exciting that days seem like weeks (in a good way) and now it is spring training. Aside from the continued decline of American civilization in the near term, all the news has been very good. Here are my best photos for this February:

About Those Dates…

griffith observatory

Over the past week I went on four dates as outlined in this RFP by Caroline on Crack.

Last night I debriefed Caroline and explained why I’m too much the Hallmark skeptic and romantic realist (or something) to follow through with the picking of a “winner” for grand prize Valentines date.

Read about my crackdates here (Pt. I) and here (Pt. II).

Celebrate Super Tuesday And My B-Day at Seven Grand

laist super tuesday party at seven grand los angelesThis coming Tuesday, Feb. 5, 22 states including California and my birth-state Illinois go to the polls to select whether they want to elect the first black president or the first female president. (My Republican friends — you know you’re out there — have a choice between four good ol’ white boys.)

LAist is throwing a post-primary Super Tuesday bash at my fave bar, Seven Grand from 7-9, and I’ll remain planted there for the remainder of the night until I get my late-night birthday present, which (I hope) will be Sen. Barack Obama claiming a majority of the nearly 1700 delegates up for grabs (he was just endorsed by the LA Times).

We won’t necessarily be talking politics — it’s not really worth talking about. Super Tuesday is our chance to celebrate one of the rare opportunities we have to make a difference by practicing democracy. And the first 75 peeps to show up wearing an “I voted” sticker gets a drink on LAist and AnswerWithAction.

And there are much more exciting and interesting things to talk about anyway. Many of you may have already RSVP’d on the facebook or upcoming event page, but if you were on the fence or will be busy much of the night, perhaps knowing that there will be some birthday celebrating going on into the night (I’ll turn 33 on February 6th) will change your mind! Hope to see you Tuesday. Happy voting.

No Reflection: Looking Out the Window

the view from my office window

I’ve been actively blogging here for 2.5 years — and intermittently since 1999, when I first launched WOOZradio. Why don’t I bother to self-promote or even make cards/stickers to increase traffic and the minimal revenue flow that could help me break even on the $15 a month or so I spend to keep Live365 running and paying royalties. Because I feel stupid talking about myself to a computer screen, I prefer to let my mind run free under the assumption assume that nobody is really reading, and, well, in the end I just do it for me.

Here’s an image that was on the front of netzoo.net back around mid-2001. Go ahead — click and see what this place looked like back then — it takes a few clicks to get to the music clips. Instead of actually listing my blogroll preferred online mags and music sites, I used orange colons. I have no idea why. The entire history of my lackadaisical updating of my personal web site / blog / whatever is well-documented (along with everything else on the innernetz) at archive.org.

That’s my little reflection for the day and now on with it. The sky looks awesome out my window (I’m here looking to the northwest) and there is much to be done at the day job (Yes, I do have a real, full-time job). My extra special Derby Dolls photo essay (thanks, Kelly) from the Tough Cookes-Fight Crew bout is scheduled to pop up now live at LAist during lunch. P.S.: If you want me to take you out in the next couple weeks, I’d love to, visit Caroline on Crack for more on that.
