VIDEO: What Analog TV is Like after the Digital Television Transition

I’m not the only one who didn’t bother to upgrade my TV set from a hand-me-down analog to a DTV-capable (or converted) set. Surprisingly, there are at least two or three channels that continue broadcasting (on UHF in Los Angeles), including HSN.com. The rest of the local channels feature an irritating infomercial on how stupid we must be for not converting our analog TV’s with a DTV converter box. Or, as you’ll see in the beginning of the video — it’s complete and total dead air (as in the case of ABC 7). No matter, I’m watching Game 5 of the NBA Finals via a Veetle livestream broadcast. Interestingly, some channels — for example, what was formerly NBC Los Angeles Channel 4 — are broadcasting the DTV infomercial exclusively in Spanish, as if to say that it’s clearly a class or language issue. Also noted — an apparent Chicago bias in the content of the DTV infomercials. Catch Alfonso Soriano rounding the bases with a quick cut to a Lou Malnatti’s Pizzeria sign about half way through. Check out the 3:30 video below for a tour of analog TV in the DTV era.

Video: Paul McCartney at Coachella

paul mccartneyI saw McCartney over 15 years ago at Soldier Field with the parents and it was one of the greatest concerts I ever saw. Amazingly, at age 67, Sir Paul the Macca was as on top of his game as ever last night at the desert music festival on the Empire Polo Grounds in Indio. He hit nearly all the high notes and many of those are high high high. Over 2.5 hours McCartney and his band played 35 songs. Wow. Standouts were “The End,” “Helter Skelter,” and “Live and Let Die.” See the awesome videos shot below by YouTube user mwillie70. Here’s the setlist via the OC Register:

There’s a ton of blather from me about to go up about his deeply moving performance, largely a tribute to his late wife Linda on the 11th anniversary of her death from breast cancer. Read all about that shortly. But the power of the set list speaks for itself …

Many more recent studies and examples of this including this pdf white paper. Geoff Livingston is even teaching a class on Social Media for Social Good at Georgetown this semester.

Below, the rough takeaway — er, walkaway by myself and Shira Lazar:
