Melody Reigns

Is content king? I say “nah.”

Melody reigns — its about presentation. I never realized what talented songwriting was behind The Editors‘ “Munich” until I heard Corinne Bailey Rae‘s rendition of it as performed live on KCRW‘s Morning Comes Eclectic.

It’s been in my head ever since I first heard it as done by Corinne. Perhaps I fall in love to easily, or perhaps its become too difficult to discern great songwriting from an all-to-Strokesy sound. Sorry, The Editors for saying that, I was totally inaccurate on first glance.

You can stream the entire set HERE.

Go to Corinne Bailey Rae’s website. And while you’re there, you can tell her I love her.

Chewbacca: Let’s Play Drums

Never thought I’d be the one of a hundred billion adding fuel to the Gnarls Barkley inferno, but this is just too good to resist. First off, the record is pure fun, and hats off to Cee-Lo and Danger Mouse for taking advantage of extra scrilla and turning out hilariously insane full-stage productions at their monumental live sets. Let’s just say that ugly has never looked so sharp.

So they got this tune, “Crazy,” that everyone and their dead grandmother has been covering. Click here for that silliness. However so, they’ve been inspiring peeps worldwide. Over the weekend, Gnarls tore up the MTV Movie Awards decked out in full Star Wars gear, with none other than Sacha Baron Cohen (as Borat) lending introductions. These guys can suck it up as much as they want if they’re gonna deliver like this. Check it:

From the Dead Dog

Guilty pleasure of late has been digging Ed Harcourt’s upcoming release, The Beautiful Lie. Much more inventive than say a Rufus Wainwright, Ben Folds or Elton John (to name the countryman-keyplayer he for some reason gets compared to) and several levels less pretentious than Thom Yorke, dude can flat-out write some killer-diller melodies.

As if that weak-ass-of-a-review isn’t convincing enough, check out Visit From the Dead Dog, a song with a feel and title that somehow reminds me of Mark Eitzel’s “Seeing Eye Dog.” There is much more at his website. Some other blogs have spoken, primarily UK-based. Couple other new cuts via Harcourt’s myspace page.
