This is the third May 1 since I’ve been living in Los Angeles. There is no day that has been more memorable, scary, or incredible in my LA experience than the past two May Firsts. May 1, 2006 had tremendous build-up, with some of the largest immigration rallies preceding it and it exceeded all expectations. Half a million people rallied and it made headlines around the world. More importantly, the local media began stepping up it’s coverage of immigrant issues as they affect every day life and commerce in Southern California. May 1, 2007 made headlines for different reasons, LAPD overreacted at MacArthur Park where rallies were taking place and many were injured by rubber bullets. It was horrible and a total embarrassment for the city and just an utter disgrace. Here’s hoping for a safe, memorable, and spirited May Day 2008 and a salute to the Dockworkers who effectively shut down all ports on the West Coast in protest of the Iraq War today.

Who Will be the New Host of Mahalo Daily?
Mere hours after I interviewed Veronica Belmont last month, news broke that she was leaving the daily video podcast she helped launch — Mahalo Daily.
Soon enough, Jason Calacanis, founder of Weblogs, Inc. and CEO of the human-powered search engine Mahalo, announced an American Idol-esque contest to find the next host of the Mahalo Daily vlog.
As dozens of potential hosts lined up to audition in side Mahalo HQ in Santa Monica, we grilled Calacanis (and his bulldogs) to find out exactly what kind of host was desired and how she might be found.
We interviewed three of the top Mahalo Vlog Idol contestants (Sarah @w00d, Bonny Pierzina, and Lisa Brewster) shortly before they took their big turn in front of the judges (and “webebrities” in their own right) Calacanis, Loren Feldman, and Alex Albrecht:

ABC Democratic Debate NOT Airing Live on the West Coast
ABC News, what is the matter with you?
ABC News, the National Constitution Center and WPVI-TV will host a Democratic Presidential Candidate debate in Philadelphia on Wednesday, April 16th. The live 90-minute debate, moderated by ABC News anchors Charles Gibson and George Stephanopoulos, will air from 8-10 PM ET/PT on the ABC Television Network. — U.S. State Dept. Web site
This is such an ignorant, irresponsible, and backwards move on behalf of ABC, it’s beyond belief.
This would be a perfect opportunity for Disney-owned ABC News Networks to promote their streaming video services. I am crossing my fingers that the debate WILL be live-streaming via local Philadelphia affiliate WPVI. As it stands right now, WPVI has a “breaking alert” that they will live-stream President Bush talking about Climate Change in about 30 minutes.
Don’t even get me started about how ridiculous this concept is: Bush addressing climate change with THE POPE at his side? Hilarious!
Philly Inquirer previews tonight’s debate. This as Jersey boy Bruce Springsteen endorsed Obama on his website.
